Solar Charge Controller Calculator: Don’t Burn Your System

Your charge controller is the heart of your solar setup. It prevents your panels from overcharging (frying) your batteries. But sizing it is tricky.

If you get a controller that is too small for your panel wattage, it will fail. If you buy one too big, you waste money. Use this tool by ShockTrail to find the perfect Amp rating.

The Sizing Tool

Input your total solar wattage and battery voltage to see the minimum Amp rating required according to safety standards.

Sum of all your panels (e.g. 4 x 100W = 400).
Recommended Controller Size:
0 Amps
Actual Current: 0 A
Safety Margin (NEC): +25%

The 1.25x Safety Rule (NEC Standard)

You cannot simply divide Watts by Volts. Solar panels can produce more than their rated power on extremely cold, clear days (Cloud Edge Effect). To be safe and compliant with the National Electrical Code (NEC), you must add a 25% safety margin to your controller size. Our calculator does this automatically.

MPPT vs. PWM: Which one do you need?

There are two types of controllers. Choosing the wrong one can cost you 30% of your power harvest.

How to Wire It Correctly

The order of connection matters. If you connect the solar panels to the controller before the battery, you can damage the controller logic board. Always follow this sequence:

  1. Step 1: Connect Battery to Charge Controller (Let it boot up).
  2. Step 2: Connect Solar Panels to Charge Controller.
  3. Step 3: Enjoy free power.

Top tier manufacturers like Victron Energy recommend fusing the wire between the controller and the battery for safety.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I mix 100W and 200W panels?

It is not recommended. If you wire them in series, the performance will drop to the lowest current panel. If you wire in parallel, it drops to the lowest voltage. Always try to match your panels.

What happens if I oversize my controller?

Nothing bad happens. Using a 60A controller for a system that only produces 20A is perfectly safe and allows for future expansion. It just costs more upfront.
