The Physics of Flow: An Easy Analogy

Electricity can be confusing. To understand wiring, imagine your solar panels are batteries in a flashlight.

  • Series Connection (The Train): You connect the Positive of one panel to the Negative of the next. It’s like stacking batteries. The “pressure” (Voltage) increases, but the “flow width” (Amperage) stays the same.
  • Parallel Connection (The River): You connect all Positives together and all Negatives together. The “pressure” (Voltage) stays low, but the “flow volume” (Amperage) becomes massive.

Warning: Cold Weather Voltage Spikes

This is where systems blow up. Solar panels produce higher voltage when they are cold. The rating on the label is at 25°C (77°F). If it freezes (0°C), the voltage can jump by 10-15%.

Fatal Mistake: Wiring 3 panels in series that total 145V into a controller rated for 150V. On a cold morning, that array will push 160V and fry the controller instantly. Always leave a 20% safety margin. Read the technical bulletin on temperature coefficients by Fluke Corporation.

The “Combiner Box” and Fusing

If you choose Parallel wiring for more than 2 panels, you cannot just twist the wires together. You must use a Combiner Box or “Branch Connectors” (Y-Connectors).

Can I mix different panel brands?

Only if their electrical specs (Imp and Vmp) are almost identical. If you put a 5A panel in series with a 10A panel, the whole system is dragged down to 5A. You lose 50% of the larger panel’s power.

Does length of wire affect my choice?

Yes. If your panels are 30 feet away from the batteries, you MUST use Series wiring. High voltage travels easily over distance. Low voltage (Parallel) struggles to push through long wires.

What is Voc vs Vmp?

Voc (Open Circuit Voltage): The max voltage when nothing is connected. Use this number for safety sizing. Vmp (Voltage at Max Power): The voltage when the panel is actually working. Use this for yield calculations.
